A black night for Egyptian football.. Al-Ahly and Pyramids exit from the Champions League
Both Al Ahly and Pyramids FC bid farewell to the African Champions League in the same round, after two painful losses at home in Cairo, on a shocking night for Egyptian football fans.
At home, Pyramids suffered a 2-1 defeat against its guest AS FAR (Royal Army), bidding farewell to the tournament after losing on aggregate with a score of 3-2.
The match witnessed a strong start for the owners of the club. The ground, where Reda Selim opened the scoring early in the 9th minute, before the Moroccan team equalized the score through Mohamed Rabie Hrimat in the 54th minute.
In the 62nd minute, Fiston Mayele succeeded in scoring a goal that gave the advantage to the Royal Army, to settle the match and lead his team to qualify, amid Pyramids’ inability to recover the result.
In another match no less exciting, Al-Ahly fell to Espérance de Tunis with a score of 3-2, He left the tournament after losing on aggregate with a score of 4-2.
Mahmoud Trezeguet opened the scoring early for Al-Ahly in the 10th minute, but Esperance came back strong in the second half, equalizing through Florian Danho in the 68th minute, before Mohamed Amine Tougai added the second goal from a penalty kick in the 78th minute.
The final minutes witnessed great excitement, after Hamza Jelassi scored an own goal in the match. His goal was for Al-Ahly in the 84th minute, but he made up for it with a fatal goal in the 90th minute, giving Esperance a valuable victory and eliminating the Egyptian team’s hopes of returning.
With these results, Al-Ahly and Pyramids are eliminated from the continental championship in a harsh scenario, after they failed to exploit the ground and crowd factors, to bid farewell to the competition through the narrow door, on a night that will remain stuck in the minds of their fans.
